Kanpur: In a tech-driven operation, police on Wednesday night busted a network of ganja smugglers in Sachendi town in Kanpur and arrested one man and seven women. The operation, led by ADCP (crime) Sumit Ramteke and trainee IPS Sumedh Milind Jadhav, involved over six dozen personnel equipped with drone cameras, who surrounded the entire area during the raid. During the operation, police recovered over 3kg of ganja and approximately Rs 92,000 in cash. Some accused managed to flee and were being identified on the basis of drone footage. Police said the illegal ganja trade was being operated a short distance from the Sachendi police station. Investigation revealed that the accused were selling ganja from paan masala stalls, with each packet weighing approximately 3 grams and being sold for Rs 50. Those arrested during the raid were Indrapal Gihar, Maya Gihar, Karishma Gihar, Deepa, and four other women, and their criminal history was being investigated. Interrogation revealed that ganja was also being supplied from Bidhnu, Kanjdan Purwa, and Madhya Pradesh. Police said they were searching for the absconding accused and others linked to the supply chain, adding that surveillance through drones would continue to crack down on such illegal operations.
