Jaipur: Doctors at SMS Hospital have successfully carried out a complex live liver transplant, with a 39-year-old woman donating a portion of her liver to save her critically ill husband, officials said Thursday.The patient was suffering from advanced liver disease marked by jaundice, ascites, blood thinning and recurrent hepatic encephalopathy. After evaluation, doctors concluded that a transplant was the only viable treatment. He was placed on the cadaver transplant waiting list, but with no organ available and his condition worsening, the family was advised to arrange a living donor. The patient’s wife volunteered, but initial tests revealed breathing issues and compromised lung function. Doctors medically optimised her condition over a month before clearing her for surgery. “The patient had been deteriorating rapidly, making urgent transplantation necessary. His wife’s decision and subsequent recovery made the transplant possible,” said Dr Dinesh Kumar Bharti of the Hepato Pancreatic Biliary Department. TNN
