Amid violent clash at wedding over leg piece, groom pronounces ‘talaq’

Kanpur: A request for a chicken leg piece not being fulfilled led to a violent clash and pronouncement of ‘talaq’ by the groom on the stage at a wedding in Baramau village of Kanpur on Saturday evening.Wedding of a girl from Baramau village with a youth from Bilhaur was being celebrated at a guest house. While the guests were being served food, an argument broke out between the groom’s party and the bride’s relatives over a chicken leg piece.The dispute escalated into a physical fight, with both sides throwing chairs and utensils at each other. Members of both sides got injured after the groom’s party called in their associates and retaliated.Amid the violence, the angry groom pronounced ‘talaq’ at the wedding venue, leading to further tension between the two sides. The conflict continued late into the night.Police reached the spot and controlled the situation, removing several people from the premises. The bride’s family opposed the groom’s action and initially refused to allow the departure, while making serious accusations.Talks and reconciliation efforts later began between both sides. In the presence of the cleric, the marriage rituals were performed again as per religious customs. The maulvi said that since the bride had not yet been sent off after the marriage, it would not be regarded as divorce. With the consent of both parties, the bride was eventually sent off with the groom.According to Inspector Sudhir Kumar, police reached the scene, but no written complaint was filed by either side.
