‘Further rise in mercury likely in Kanpur division’

Kanpur: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for citizens, warning of strong, hot winds and a possible heatwave. Clear skies are expected to push the mercury above 40°C during the noon hours, providing intense heat conditions across the region.According to the IMD’s forecast for the ongoing week (April 17–24), temperatures are likely to continue rising, with maximum temperature reaching up to 43°C towards the weekend. On Sunday, Kanpur recorded a maximum temperature of 40.9°C and a minimum of 20.8°C, with a relative humidity at 57%.Dr S Sunil Pandey, weather scientist at CSA University, stated that a significant rise in temperature is anticipated across the Kanpur division from April 20 to 24. “The maximum temperature is expected to range between 41°C and 42°C at the beginning of the week and may climb to 43°C by April 23–24,” he said. He further noted that the heat index is also likely to increase due to prolonged dry conditions.Dr Pandey advised residents to avoid outdoor activities during the afternoon hours. “People should cover their bodies, wear caps or scarves, and carry water to stay hydrated,” he cautioned.Following Saturday’s high temperatures, city roads were largely deserted during the mid-day hours. Most citizens chose to remain indoors, while those who went out for essential work were seen taking cover from sun using scarves and umbrellas.
